WHAT'S NEW...

  NEW BRIDGE IN DURHAM 2007
CLIFF LUDMAN

Cliff Ludman, Secretary of the Durham Group, Ramblers' Association, mailed the members recently about a new bridge under construction in Durham. The following are his notes:
"I am sure that you will be pleased to note that work has started on the construction of a bridge over Old Durham Beck near its confluence with the Wear (NZ 2858 4205). This is to replace the old stepping stones that took Durham City footpath No 80 across the beck. The stepping stones were washed away many years ago. This will complete the path that runs on the right bank of the Wear all the way from Framwelgate Bridge to Shincliffe Bridge. The abutments are in the process of being built and the bridge will be a large structure spanning three to four times the width of the beck and rising high above the normal water level. This is presumably to take into account the flash floods that are known to come down the beck as well as floods in the main river. It has been said that Banks are interested in generating flood planes in that area in order to protect their development a km down stream. This would have required the bridge to be substantial."

I'll try and include an image when the bridge is complete.

BIRTHDAY TREAT
GERMANICUS

Elizabeth defied repetition this year, by buying me a coin for my birthday, a first, and a neat bit of detective work too! This Germanicus puts a new head to my 'head count'. As soon as 'dadscoins' is up to date again, I'll be posting the coin to my new, all singing, all dancing website. Thanks hun!
